Christopher Karl, a spokesman for Ambius, the landscaping contractor responsible for placing the tree, stated, "That tree was shipped from Huflungpoo, China via the Panama Canal. On its 3 month voyage, across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal, it became dessicated, and was subsequently attacked by voracious equatorial skunk beetles." He stated that, " The beetles burrowed tunnels through the cambium of the tree and made it as brittle as a candy cane." He reluctantly added, "shit happens!"
